ATTICA — An unattached garage with a vehicle inside was damaged in a fire in Venice Township Monday morning.

The fire at 14834 E. TR 104 was reported about 9:15 a.m., and personnel from Attica-Venice-Reed Fire District, Attica-Venice-Reed EMS District, Bloom Township Fire Department, Scipio-Republic Fire Department and the county’s Echo unit responded.

Chief Lonnie Jaynes of Attica-Venice-Reed Fire Department said the first crew on scene saw heavy smoke coming from the garage and fire inside of it and on the roof line. Also, the vehicle inside was burning.

Jaynes said it took firefighters about 40 minutes to get the fire under control and an hour to extinguish it. There were extremely high heat conditions inside, and they used about 4,500 gallons to extinguish it, he said.

Jaynes said the cause was undetermined, and he believed the vehicle was the ignition source. The resident had gotten home about 8:20 a.m. and parked the vehicle in the garage, and the fire department was dispatched about an hour later.

Jaynes said the homeowner had gone to bed because he worked evenings. A passerby saw the smoke coming out of the garage and banged on the door, he said.

The owner was thankful to the person who stopped and was banging on the door to awake him, he said.

No one was hurt.

Jaynes said he believed the garage was repairable, and the vehicle was destroyed.

He estimated damage to the garage at $10,000, about $3,000 for the vehicle and about $4,000 for the building’s contents.

The property is owned by Bradley Fosnaugh, according to the Seneca County Auditor’s Office’s website.
