H-L offering a stipend in effort to retain bus drivers

BASCOM — Hopewell-Loudon Board of Education voted to offer a stipend in an effort to attract and retain school bus drivers Wednesday evening.

A one-time stipend of up to $1,000 will be given to new and current drivers when they complete 600 hours of driving duty. Drivers who only drive half of the daily route will receive $300 after 300 hours for the district.

High school Principal Jason Miller announced that in the coming school year, teachers will have 30 minutes of collaboration first thing Friday mornings. While the teachers are meeting, students will be involved with intervention, study halls and enrichment activities. This will not affect the start time of the school day.

Superintendent Jeff Holbrook said blacktopped parking lots are to be resealed and striped. More handicap and veteran spaces will be added. A new traffic pattern is to be enacted. Buses will drop off and load on the north side of the building. Safety and convenience have motivated these changes, he said.

“The new LED lights in the Chieftain gym really make a difference. They will save the district $1 per hour that those lights are on,” Holbrook said.

In personnel matters, the board accepted the resignation of Kate Allison. A two-year contract was approved for Bonnie Mack, and three-year contracts for Doug Depinet and Kim Park.

Athletic and academic supplement contracts were approved.

All administrators and supervisors were granted a 2% salary increase.

Donations from the H-L Athletic Boosters, Journey Financial Solutions and Bascom Lions Club

were accepted.

The board heard the first reading on policy changes. All are revisions of existing policies.

The board took action to:

• Approve an agreement with Northern Ohio Educational Computer Association.

• Approve an athletic code of conduct and athletic handbook.

• Approve a contract for school nursing health services.

• Set grades K-6 fees at $45 with an additional $5 for final forms fee. High school class fees will remain the same.

• Approve a junior high and high school student handbook as presented.

• Approve an overnight trip for the FFA.

Nominations for the H-L Hall of Fame will be accepted through Aug. 30. Nominations should be directed to the board office.
