April is the library’s favorite time of year

It’s a librarian’s favorite time of the year … and no, I don’t mean Summer Reading.

Spring has arrived, and with that comes two very exciting events at the library, starting with National Library Week. National Library Week is a national celebration sponsored by the American Library Association, and libraries across the country each April to recognize the contributions of libraries and librarians. National Library Week will take place April 8-14 this year.

We, here at the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library, have a number of fun activities planned to celebrate National Library Week. Our favorite way to celebrate is by giving back to our patrons.

This year, children will have the opportunity to “Read Away Your Fines,” during the entire month of April. For every 15 minutes read at the library, $1 will be deducted from the fines of children ages 5-17. Children who read for one hour will have $5 deducted. Children will sign in and out at the checkout desk, and their total time will be removed from their fine. There will be a designated table set up near the checkout desk that children can read at if they choose, but reading can be done anywhere in the library. There are a few restrictions. You cannot read ahead for fines not yet accrued, you may not read away fines on someone else’s card, and fine forgiveness only applies to overdue items. You cannot read away the cost of a lost or damaged item.

Additional activities include “Why I Love My Library,” a display that asks patrons to let us know what they love most about their library. We hope to have that display filled with wonderful stories and ways the library impacts your life. We also will have special Tiffin-Seneca Public Library-themed coloring pages to do in the Junior Department as well as a number of giveaways for patrons to partake in. April 10 is National Library Workers Day, so be sure to stop in and say hello to your favorite library staff members!

One more exciting thing going on at the library is the annual Friends of the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library book sale. The book sale will take place April 27-29. Times will be 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 1-4:30 p.m. Sunday. Sunday is bag sale day, where you can fill any sized bag for only $2. There will be a special Friends preview sale April 26 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Not a Friend of the Tiffin-Seneca Public Library? Memberships will be available at the door starting at just $5 per year. There are so many things to find at the sale this year — adult fiction, non-fiction, large print books, children’s books, media items (including DVDs, audiobook and music CDs), and more! The annual book sale is to take place the last weekend in April.
